seconds : : the imperfect artwork
Lee Welch
2 December - 23 December 2006
Imperfect is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as not fully formed or done; faulty, incomplete. How do you decide when an artwork is finished or not, or if it's a success?
Twenty-five artists present work which considers failure, slippage, the anti-monument, the experiment, the happy accident and serendipity, often in relation to multiplicity or the production of multiples.
Participating artists are: Ide Maloney, Lee Welch, Brian Fay, Gary Coyle, Fiona O' Dwyer, Michael Fortune, Sean Taylor, David Beattie, Aideen Barry, Cliona Harmey, Helen Hughes, Bea McMahon, Sally Timmons, Sonia Sheil, Eileen Healy, Felicity Clear, Alan Phelan, Danny McCarthy, John Langan, Martin Shannon, Mark Curran, Noel Molloy, Mary-Ruth Walsh, Simone Schneider and Simon Lewandowski.
Seconds was conceived as a means of inviting artists to reconsider work which they may have deemed to be a failure in some sense, or to question notions of success, failure, self-doubt and legitimacy. Eileen Healy has responded by presenting 'failed' test strips from the darkroom, while Mark Curran presents footage which was shot as part of The Breathing Factory project but which failed to be included in the larger research project. John Langan and Michael Fortune both question the promise of the ideal lifestyle which the property market and stereotypes of the rural present to us. The Inner Critic handbag by Ide Moloney exposes the voice of the inner critic in a wearable work of art, while Sean Taylor invites us to engage in direct action by choosing legitimate targets for paper airplanes.
Curator Aileen Lambert is a Wexford-based artist whose practise includes curating and writing. Aileen will discuss the process involved in curating the show at a public talk on Sunday 10th December, 2.30 pm. She will be joined by curator Paul O' Neill, who will discuss failure and usefulness in relation to his curatorial practise.
